Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a Smart Meter?
A: Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is commonly referred to as “Smart Meter” or “Smart Grid” Technology. Unlike traditional meters, Smart Meters allow for wireless, two-way communication between the meter and Utility personnel. They also will provide a much more accurate and detailed reading of electric usage.
2. Why is the City of Banning upgrading to Smart Meters?
A: Smart Meter/AMI technology will further enhance our customer service. The new meters will allow the Electric Utility to do remote meter reading, as well as initiation and termination of service. This means that, in most cases, we will not need to access your property to complete these services. In addition, Smart Meters will ensure the most accurate and reliable customer usage data is being used to process your Utility bill. Smart Meters also lay the groundwork for future systems which will provide our customers with access to real-time utility billing information.
3. When are the Smart Meters being installed?
A: The Electric Utility will begin exchanging the meters right after Labor Day. Residents will receive a door hanger on their door approximately one week prior to the meters being exchanged. The process to complete smart meter installation across the entire City is expected to take approximately six months.
4. Do I need to be present when the Smart Meter is installed?
A: As long as your meter is accessible, there is no need to be present. The actual exchange of the meter should only take a few minutes. Utility personnel will coordinate with you if any special arrangements need to be made.
5. Will I lose power when the meters are exchanged?
A: There will be a brief power outage between when the old meter is removed and the Smart Meter is installed. The process to remove and install the new meter should only take a few minutes and power will be restored immediately.
6. Will there be any changes to my utility bill as a result of the Smart Meter?
A: Smart Meters provide extremely accurate usage data and should reflect closely to your average daily usage for the specific time of year. In the future, we aim to provide customers with real-time utility billing information that they can access online. The installation of Smart Meters brings us one step closer to this goal.
